The
real reason why Jon Snow had to die was because his counterpart in the Wheel of
Time asked 3 question of the Aelfinn, who had to answer truthfully.

The last part of his answer had been ‘To live, you must die.”
This
was just incorporated into the Game of Thrones as Jon Snow having to die. Maester Aemon gave him the cryptic answer as
the Aelfinn provided to Rand in saying “Kill the boy and let the man be born.”
