ASOIAF: Sansa's punishment
“I’d shoot you too, but if I do Mother says they’d
kill my uncle Jaime. Instead you’ll just be punished and we’ll send word to
your brother about what will happen to you if he doesn’t yield. Dog, hit her.”

Meryn Trant |
“Leave her face,” Joffrey commanded. “I like her pretty.”
Boros slammed a fist into Sansa’s belly, driving the air out of her. When she doubled over, the knight grabbed her hair and drew his sword, and for one hideous instant she was certain he meant to open her throat. As he laid the flat of the blade across her thighs, she thought her legs might break from the force of the blow. Sansa screamed. Tears welled in her eyes. It will be over soon. She soon lost count of the blows.

Boros shoved a meaty hand down the front of Sansa’s bodice and gave a hard yank. The silk came tearing away, baring her to the waist. Sansa covered her breasts with her hands. She could hear sniggers, far off and cruel. “Beat her bloody,” Joffrey said, “we’ll see how her brother fancies—”
The Imp’s voice cracked like a whip, and suddenly Sansa was free. She stumbled to her knees, arms crossed over her chest, her breath ragged. “Is this your notion of chivalry, Ser Boros?” Tyrion Lannister demanded angrily. His pet sellsword stood with him, and one of his wildlings, the one with the burned eye. “What sort of knight beats helpless maids?”
Tyrion chastising Joffrey |
“Careful with those,” warned the dwarf’s sellsword. “You don’t want to get blood all over those pretty white cloaks.”
“Someone give the girl something to cover herself with,” the Imp said. Sandor Clegane unfastened his cloak and tossed it at her. Sansa clutched it against her chest, fists bunched hard in the white wool. The coarse weave was scratchy against her skin, but no velvet had ever felt so fine.
“This girl’s to be your queen,” the Imp told Joffrey. “Have you no regard for her honor?”
“I’m punishing her.”
“For what crime? She did not fight her brother’s battle.”
“She has the blood of a wolf.”
“And you have the wits of a goose.”
“You can’t talk to me that way. The king can do as he likes.”
“Aerys Targaryen did as he liked. Has your mother ever told you what happened to him?”
Tyrion Lannister raised an eyebrow. “I am not threatening the king, ser, I am educating my nephew. Bronn, Timett, the next time Ser Boros opens his mouth, kill him.” The dwarf smiled. “Now that was a threat, ser. See the difference?”
“No doubt she will. And why wait? Joffrey, shall we send for your mother?”
The king flushed.
“Nothing to say, Your Grace?” his uncle went on. “Good. Learn to use your ears more and your mouth less, or your reign will be shorter than I am. Wanton brutality is no way to win your people’s love . . . or your queen’s.”
“Fear is better than love, Mother says.” Joffrey pointed at Sansa. “She fears me.”
The Imp sighed. “Yes, I see. A pity Stannis and Renly aren’t twelve-year-old girls as well. Bronn, Timett, bring her.”

TWOT: Egwene's punishment
Silviana, the Mistress of Novices |
Elaida |
“That first morning before dawn, in Silviana’s study, she did her best while the Mistress of Novices plied a hard-soled slipper on her bared bottom. She made no effort to stifle her sobs when they came, or later her wordless howls. When her legs wanted to kick, she allowed them to flail until the Mistress of Novices trapped them under one of hers, awkwardly because of Silviana’s skirts, and then she let her toes drum the floor while her head tossed wildly. She tried to draw the pain inside her, to drink it in like breath. Pain was as much a part of life as breathing. That was how the Aiel saw life. But, oh, Light, it hurt!”
What they have in common:
While
a prisoner in the White Tower Elaida had Egwene beaten, on a daily basis, by
the Mistress of Novices, to break her will.
While
a prisoner in the Red Keep Joffrey constantly terrorizes Sansa and has her stripped
and beaten by his Kingsguard.
Elaida,
the Amyrlin Seat, was an Aes Sedai who had a foretelling that directed her
actions. Her foretellings were not about
her but she misinterpreted them as such.
Because of this she sent Aes Sedai to capture the Dragon Reborn. Aes Sedai refer to the Amyrlin Seat as
Mother. When a rescue was attempted Rand
was able to shatter the shield of the three Aes Sedai holding him. The shield was shattered with such force that
it stilled the Aes Sedai. Stilling to an
Aes Sedai was a death sentence as the Aes Sedai in question eventually lost the
will to live.
This
to me equates to the prophecy given to Cersei by Maggy the Frog. She was told when asked “Will the king and I
have children?” The answer was returned
“Oh, aye. Six-and-ten for him, and three for you.” Maggy was not done and proceeded to tell her
that “Gold shall be their crowns and gold their shrouds.” The stilling of the three Aes Sedai is the equivalent of
death of Cersei’s three children.
When
the Seanchan attacked the White Tower Egwene with the help of novices creates a
gateway to the Tower store room where ter’angreal, angreal and sa’angreal were
kept. She retrieved Vora’s sa’angreal, also known as
the white rod, to assist in fighting off the attackers. In the end she uses it and created a counter weave to
balefire called the Flame of Tar Valon.

I
believe that Cersei will probably order Ser Robert Strong, aka the Mountain, to
kill Jaime. She will then send him out
to ignite the wildfire that has been strategically placed around the Red Keep and
King's Landing similar to the events that took place with Mad King Aerys. This also suggests to me that the city is once again under attack. I then see Jaime reanimating as a wight,
making him the valonqar, and wrapping his hands around Cersei’s throat and
choking the life from her. Sansa will
witness all this and be helpless when the Hound enters the throne room and the
two will come together again. I don’t
know if it will be the same cloak that he left behind or another one but I
believe that Sansa will ask him to take an oath to defend the city and he will
accept, making him the knight she always knew he could be. It is then that he will seek out his brother
where they will fight to the death. It
is during this fight where the Mountain will meet his demise at the hands of
his brother. How fitting it will be when
the Hound in the end burns him with wildfire.
In
this scenario Sansa is Egwene, the white rod is the Hound in his white cloak
and his actions of stopping the city from being burned by wildfire is the
counter weave to balefire.
During
the attack on the White Tower Elaida was rendered unconscious and taken by the Seanchan from
the Tower tied to the back of a to'raken.
When she came to she discovered that she had an a’dam placed around her
neck. The a’dam is a flexible
collar. Once the collar is in place it
stops a woman from being able to channel the One Power without the express
permission of the woman who controls the bracelet and leash. This in essence is another form of stilling
as the leashed person never has control of when she can use the One Power.
This
to me is why Cersei dies the way she does by the hands of the valonqar. The hands of the valonqar is the a’dam.
While
taking her test for accepted there was a resonance caused by the dream ring
ter'angreal that caused oddities. During each of the three tests the resonance
becomes more pronounced and the visions more prophetic. During the final test
she experiences the following:
“Something is wrong, she thought. The wrongness had nothing to do with her sudden dizziness, or at least that was not what felt wrong. It was something else. But she had no idea what.
There was an Aes Sedai at her elbow, a woman with Sheriam's high cheekbones but dark hair and concerned brown eyes, and the handwide stole of the Keeper on her shoulders. Not Sheriam, though. Egwene had never seen her before; she was sure she knew her as well as she knew herself. Haltingly, she put a name to the woman. Beldeine.
“Are you ill, Mother?”
Her stole is green. That means she was raised from the Green Ajah. The Keeper always comes from the same Ajah as the Amyrlin she serves. Which means if I'm the Amyrlin — if? — then I was Green Ajah, too. That thought shook her. Not that she had been Green Ajah, but that she had to reason it out. Light, something is wrong with me.”
Egwene sees herself as the Amrylin seat which comes to fruition.

Egwene
after Elaida is taken is chosen as the Amyrlin Seat to all Aes Sedai in the now
healed White Tower. I believe that after
Cersei is killed Sansa will be made the new queen and completes the prophecy
“Aye. Queen you shall be…until there
comes another younger and more beautiful, to cast you down and take all that
you hold dear.”
Summary:
Both
Egwene and Sansa experienced beatings and torment at the hands of their
captors. Both were put in their position
because of prophecies that undermined the women who tried to force them to be
in one case and avoid them in the other.
Because of the prophecies one woman caused the metaphorical death of
three women who called her “Mother” the actions of the other brought about the actual
death of her children. Egwene was punished at the hands of a sister who called Elaida mother. Sansa was punished at the hands of Cersei's son Joffrey. Elaida is killed
metaphorically when an a’dam is placed around her neck and Cersei is killed
when the valonqar wraps his hands around her neck and chokes the life from
her. Nobody believed that Egwene was a
Dreamer. Is this why Sansa was such a
daydreamer? She dreamt of being a regal
Queen like Cersei Lannister, and that just like in the epic songs she will meet
her knight in shining armor. Ironically
the Hound who never wanted to be a knight turned out to be one in the end.
Comments encouraged. Love to
hear the idea’s of others. Most believe that since I present my idea’s as
“fact like” I’m not open to change my viewpoints which is far from the
truth. I simply look at the information presented and go from
there. If you can shine a light on another way of thinking that opens the
door to debate.
I forgot to include the fact that Sansa is going to choose Willas as her husband for the good of the realm. At this point Sansa will throw away her girlhood fantasies of her perfect prince.
ReplyDeleteAnother way that things could play out is the Hound acting as her knight in shining armor that she could actually choose him as her king to her queen.
ReplyDeleteIn the books Sansa brought about her own punishment so to speak, to a small degree. She told Cercei about Ned's plan, and that give Cercei a head up over Ned. That is also why she loses her direwolf, she betrayed her family.
ReplyDeleteI see could Sansa being the Queen in the North for example, but she has no claim to throne whatsoever. How would she end up in Kings Landing and how would she claim the throne?
The more beautiful Queen who will take Cercei's place is more then likely Daenerys or Brienne the Beauty.
All claims to the throne are going to be cut. I see Stannis dying in the books also and they have already killed his wife and daughter on the show so that doesn't bode well for them in the books either. I can see Sansa hooking up with Willas and making a Tyrell/Stark merger this time on her terms. I see Dany getting with Tyrion as I believe it will be revealed that they are brother and sister. I think Dany is being seduced by the dark side, the COTF, and I don't see her living through the series. Jon has a claim but I think he goes off with Margaery in the end if he survives as he will be too much of a legend and he won't succumb to being worshiped. Brienne is going to hook up with Jaime. He is going to die but may end up having his child which she may end up naming Duncan. Of course he will be tall.
Delete“I dreamt of a maid at a feast with purple serpents in her hair, venom dripping from their fangs. And later I dreamt that maid again, slaying a savage giant in a castle built of snow.”
ReplyDeleteSo if you combine the prophecy above with a vision not in the books but seen in the TV show you get the answer to "slaying a savage giant in a castle built in the snow." Dany had a vision of the Kings Landing Throne room with a hole in the dome of the ceiling and it was snowing inside.
Combine the two and throw in my theory of Sansa asking "The Hound" to go after and stop his brother "The Mountain" you get her slaying a savage giant in a castle built of snow.
Hi! Really enjoying your great blog! Why is the tv show putting Sansa with Ramsay? She is in the Eyrie for now, but do you think GRRM will have Sansa meet up with Ramsay at some point? I am trying to see where her story leads but with her fighting in Winterfell, it is hard to say at this point.
ReplyDeleteWell I think they are doing it so as not to introduce another character to the show that has so many characters already. Sansa is with Littlefinger right now and he has set her up to marry Harry who is Little Robin's heir if he were to die. The plan was to have the two marry and she keep her alias as his daughter. Robin would die after a time and then Harry would be the heir to the Vale. Sansa would reveal her true identity and then Harry would feel obligated to fight for her home in Winterfell. They eliminated Jayne Pool who under the guise as Arya married Ramsay to give him legitimacy as Warden of the North. She escapes with Theon and the 2 meet up with Stannis and that is where it ends. The whole Sansa thing is only known because of released excerpts from the Winds of Winter. Most likely they will meet up in Winterfell.
DeleteThank you for that explanation. I am trying to piece together the 'big picture' of all this and I like your theories the best. GRRM has stated that Stannis is still alive in the next book, for a time....and I bet it isn't Brienne that kills him in the book. Plus Stannis cannot be in on Shireen's death because Shireen is at Castle Black with her mother and the Red Witch, so obviously her death is at castle black. Interesting why the tv show made Stannis look really bad and not so honorable. I am very excited for Tyrion though, he is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason why I believe Sansa will be queen:
ReplyDeletehttp://imgur.com/a/F3Gyi
How I answered a question on who will be Queen and how Sansa and Arya could switch positions in who they wanted to be and who they will become:
ReplyDeleteSorry but Sansa will be Queen and The Hound will be her king. Sansa however will rule the kingdom. Everything changes as women get more power and it is accepted even in the seven kingdoms
http://howthegameofthronesends.blogspot.com/2016/03/the-reasons-why-i-believe-sansa-will-be.html
Also Arya pretty much tells us last season that as girls Sansa wanted to be queen and go off and marry the handsome king on the Iron Throne. She said that she wanted to be a knight, and pick up a sword like father and go off to battle.
https://imgur.com/a/F3Gyi
Well Sansa got a taste of the sitting next to Joffrey and take his abuse. She found out that a handsome face doesn't equate to love and romance. Joffrey was far from chivalrous to boot. On the other hand the Hound has always tried to protect her and you can tell from both the books and the TV show he has feelings for her. He doesn't want to be a knight because he knows how "knights" behave and doesn't want to be associated with that. He has made a serious character change and Sansa will see his inner self and find the prince charming that she has been searching for all along.
Arya is a bad ass and of that no one can deny. There are only 3 Starks left, Sansa, Bran and Arya. There always has to be a Stark in Winterfell and who best to lead the charge when battle is called upon. Bran is out as he is the 3-eyed crow and per my theory he is now old and nearing the end of his life as the face of a Weirwood tree seems to take on the resemblance of the person who resides within its roots. So Arya seems to be the obvious choice. They will both get exactly what they want with whip cream on top.
To flip things up GRRM could reverse their roles and Sansa become the warrior based upon the character that she is based upon Egewene (who becomes the Amyrlin Seat; basically the queen but she led the armies in the end. Arya is partially based upon Min who wound up marrying the Dragon Reborn thus making her similar to a queen. I could see this happening and wouldn't be surprised in the least.

This excerpt from the Wheel of Time leads me to believe that there won't be an Iron Throne left to sit after everything is said and done:
ReplyDelete“From the corner of her eye, Moiraine saw Egwene, far down the side hall, disappearing hurriedly around a corner. A stooped shape in a leather jerkin, head down and arms loaded with bundles, shambled at her heels. Moiraine permitted herself a small smile, quickly masked. If the girl shows as much initiative in Tar Valon, she thought wryly, she will sit in the Amyrlin Seat one day. If she can learn to control that initiative. If there is an Amyrlin Seat left on which to sit.”
Another reason why I think Sansa will marry the hound (puppies in her lap):
ReplyDeleteBut she had not forgotten his words, either. The heir to Winterfell, she would think as she lay abed at night. It’s your claim they mean to wed. Sansa had grown up with three brothers. She never thought to have a claim, but with Bran and Rickon dead . . . It doesn’t matter, there’s still Robb, he’s a man grown now, and soon he’ll wed and have a son. Anyway, Willas Tyrell will have Highgarden, what would he want with Winterfell?
Sometimes she would whisper his name into her pillow just to hear the sound of it. “Willas, Willas, Willas.” Willas was as good a name as Loras, she supposed. They even sounded the same, a little. What did it matter about his leg? Willas would be Lord of Highgarden and she would be his lady.
She pictured the two of them sitting together in a garden with puppies in their laps, or listening to a singer strum upon a lute while they floated down the Mander on a pleasure barge. If I give him sons, he may come to love me. She would name them Eddard and Brandon and Rickon, and raise them all to be as valiant as Ser Loras. And to hate Lannisters, too. In Sansa’s dreams, her children looked just like the brothers she had lost. Sometimes there was even a girl who looked like Arya.
